MárkusZínház

MárkusZínház Theatre was founded in the 1980s when its members left the state theatre and embarked on study trips across Europe to learn about traditional puppet performances and the work of puppeteers exploring new paths. The theatre initially operated as a touring company and now has its own intimate venue in Pécs.

MárkusZínház creates its own plays, organizes cultural and educational programs, and is particularly known as the organizer of a significant event that bridges and showcases the traditions and contemporary practices of shadow theatre, featuring ensembles from Europe and Asia – the Karakulit International Puppet Festival and Symposium.

MárkusZínház considers Hungarian intellectual heritage, traditions, and the Hungarian language as its main pillars. Its repertoire primarily features Hungarian folk tales and classics.

Over the years, the theatre has received numerous festival awards, and in 2009, our founding members, Gábor Pilári and Zsuzsanna Vajda, were honored with a state award.
