Putin is skiing in Kwidzyn, Poland

Divadlo Líšeň will present the play “Putin Skis / The Play of the Birth of a Killer” at the International Festival Animo Kwidzyn.

On the sixteenth anniversary of Anna Politkovskaya’s murder – October 7th, Brno’s Divadlo Líšeň will present the play “Putin Skis / The Play of the Birth of a Killer” to the international audience at the festival in Kwidzyn. The work is inspired by the writings of the Russian-Ukrainian journalist who was murdered on Putin’s birthday. We consider our performance about Putin’s crimes as a contribution to the birthday of the Kremlin’s murderer.

The stage report “Putin Skis” explores the theme of Putin’s rise to power and Russia’s direction towards totalitarianism. It is performed in a military tent around a large writing table, serving as the setting for “scenes from Russia.” The performance received the Best Director award and the Jan Wilkowski Award for puppet animation at the international festival Spotkania in Toruń in 2011. At the Valise Festival in Łomża in 2012, the jury awarded the actors performing in the play – Luďek Vémola and Tomáš Machek.

The performance is currently part of the Provocative Theatre Funded by the EHP funds.

The play was created in 2009. Over the course of thirteen years, we have had more than 150 performances, mostly accompanied by discussions on the situation in Russia. Through this performance, we aimed to draw attention to Putin’s totalitarian and criminal practices and the dangers they pose not only to Russia but to the entire world. Now, these risks are evident to the whole world.

Since the beginning of Russian aggression, we have been performing the play to support a free Ukraine. We pay tribute to the immense courage to face this treacherous war. We perform in honor of all those who fell defending their country against the criminal from the Kremlin and in memory of Anna Politkovskaya, who accurately named the birth of the killer and paid for it with her own life.

In response to Russian aggression, we have changed the subtitle and ending of the performance, but otherwise, the play has remained unchanged since its creation.
